Personal Description:

My specialist subjects are English and German (bilingual), and I am also tutor Maths, Drama, and History, as well as general writing technique and exam preparation. Further to academic tutorship and mentorship, I am also a trained actor, and have experience in helping people prepare for auditions, performances, and public speaking.

I am a professional actor, and have recently finished filming roles in a TV series and a feature film. I also write plays and perform as a sketch and stand-up comedian. I enjoy singing (classic rock, Sinatra, musical theatre, opera - you name it) as well as playing guitar. I enjoy travelling and learning about different cultures - I spent a large part of my childhood growing up in China, and have travelled to a lot of different countries in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere. I like to read (Dostoyevsky and Pratchett are two particular favourites), and I love going to the theatre.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been tutoring and mentoring for over 5 years, starting while I was at university (where I was a mentor and note-taker in a variety of subjects) and continuing throughout my further education and professional career. I have been working as a teaching assistant and one-to-one mentor in both primary and secondary schools for over 2 years, working with students on elementary English and Maths skills all the way up though to GCSEs, A-Levels, and university applications.

Please find some examples of my one to one experience, below:

Mentoring, A-Level Politics/RS/Classics with Dom - I worked with Dom to improve his exam technique and organisation - both in terms of note-taking and revision. We developed strategies to help Dom cope with his Dyslexia and organisational problems, and made a lot of progress in terms of Dom knowing how to process information in a way that was useful to him, allowing him to complete papers to the best of his ability without rushing or panicking. I introduced him to several different techniques including detailed essay plans, spider diagrams, automatic writing, and various methods of self-analysis, to help him gain confidence in his own abilities and take ownership of his learning.

Mentoring, GCSE German, other subjects with Dominic - I spent over a year working with Dominic as his one-to-one mentor (he has Asperger's and ADHD), forging a strong professional yet personal working relationship and helping him to develop not just his academic abilities over a wide range of subjects, but his social and organisational skills as well. In the time we worked together, Dominic made an incredible amount of progress, becoming one of the top students in his year group (Year 9) and even acting as a student ambassador for the SEN department. We then continued our working relationship in preparation for his German GCSE (still ongoing), developing his vocabulary and understanding of sentence structure, and his is on course to achieve an A* in his upcoming Year 10 assessment.

AS-Level Drama with Tamzen - I worked with Tamzen for several weeks in preparation for for AS-Level Drama exam. Our work focussed on extensive textual analysis of the exam's primary source ('A Servant to Two Masters' by Goldini), identifying themes, characters arcs, and ideas for direction/performance/scenography. However, I also endeavoured to increase her overall knowledge and understanding of performance and theatrical practice, so as to help her in future exams as well as her desired career as a performer. Tamzen completed her exam with a passing grade, and was very happy with her progress in learning about her chosen field.

Mentoring, note taking, BA Music with Jessica - During Jessica's third year of her BA programme, I acted as her notetaker during lectures (including Music Theory, Composition, Music History), as well as her mentor outside of class time. Having Asperger's, Jessica often struggled to understand and implement certain concepts and ideas, which I helped her to familiarise herself with and integrate into her learning. Part of my job was also to help her to stay calm when stressed or anxious during lectures, and to provide her with a patient and caring point of contact between her and her lecturers. Jessica progressed very well on her course and comfortably passed her exams.

Mentoring, university applications, various AS-level subjects with George - My work with George focussed primarily in assisting him in preparing for university applications, as well as occasionally helping with the AS-level work (Further Maths, Physics, Art and Critical Thinking). As a very bright young man with aspirations of studying Engineering at Cambridge, a large amount of my work consisted of encouraging him in both academic and extracurricular pursuits, giving him advice on skills to work on (writing personal statements, filling out application forms, interview technique), and providing him with the resources with which to help his own development.

Mentoring, A-Level Drama with Lucy - My work with Lucy encompassed advising her during her preparation for her A-Level Drama practical exams, helping her to develop her individual skill set as well as giving her general feedback on the work she was doing within her group project. I also helped her in deciding what her route would be following her exams: whether to apply for universities or drama schools, and which. Lucy went on to pass her exams and pursue a career in performance by applying to drama schools.

Mentoring, various A-Level subjects with Mary - I worked with Mary on her university applications, as well as on her revision techniques and preparations for her final A-level exams (particularly Geography). Most of my her involved building her confidence and providing her with a good sounding board for her ideas and ambition, as well as giving her tried and tested techniques and advice for examinations. She passed her exams with flying colours and went on to study Meteorology at the University of East Anglia.

Note-taking, BA Mathematics with Kelly - I worked as Kelly's notetaker during her first year of BA Maths, which involved me accompanying her to lectures and seminars, taking notes, and spending time with her after these sessions to go through said notes and make sure the concepts were clear and that she was able to process the work and continue to develop her skills individually. As Kelly suffered from severe Dylsexia, confidence was often one of her primary issues, and part of my work also involved providing her with encouragement and motivation. She passed all her first year exams and continued into her second year with renewed self-confidence.

Tutoring Approach:

I am naturally a very creative, enthusiastic and passionate person, who takes great pleasure in passing on knowledge to others and watching them develop their our interest and enjoyment of subjects. I like to combine consistently high levels of encouragement and discipline with a positive, friendly and highly personable attitude in order to forge a productive and enjoyable tutor/student relationship. I love watching my students succeed and take ownership of their own strengths and abilities, and I find it important for them to know that I take a great amount of joy in their progress. Most of all, I want my students to enjoy learning, and to have the desire to continue to develop beyond my tutorship.
