I am an Assistant Headteacher and Faculty Leader for English in a successful secondary school with over 20 years' teaching experience. I lead a large, dynamic team of English specialists and am immensely proud of the excellent results we have helped students achieve over the years. My role means that I am at the forefront of curriculum changes and have produced unique, engaging programmes of study at all key stages right up to A Level. I also work as a senior A Level examiner and moderator for a major exam board, a role I have held for over 12 years, that gives me unique insights into the examination process and the essential qualities students need to be successful in English Language and English Literature.
For the last 21 years, I have taught English Language, English Literature, Drama and Theatre Studies and English Functional Skills to the full range of age and ability ranges from Year 7 right up to Year 13. I have also taught evening classes at a Further Education college and have many years' experience of private tuition.
In my Assistant Headteacher role, one of my responsibilities is for whole-school literacy, ensuring that fundamental literacy and communication skills are an essential part of students' learning regardless of subject. I am also responsible for the continuing professional development of teachers, ensuring they keep up to date with the latest research, skills and strategies.
The key to successful tuition is providing a personalised programme that is tailored to the specific needs of the individual learner, whatever their targets or desired outcomes, whether it's aiming for a C grade / Level 5 or A/A* / Level 9. I quickly diagnose a student's strengths and weaknesses and then devise a series of sessions that will 'fill in the gaps', remove the barriers to learning and boost progress and achievement.
