In my current job I am a head of math’s and for over 10 years. I direct and develop the mathematics and numeracy provision in my School. I have developed the monitoring of pupils’ progress by creating my well-renowned master tracker. I work with SLT and the governors to develop the vision and strategic direction of the mathematics department, including the development of an effective intervention plan. In the past I have been part of pastoral teams, working as a form tutor but this year, I have been given form time to work directly on my intervention program. This program has been recognised as very successful (see OFSTED report 2012). I ensure numeracy is a key focus across the school to help embed the basic key skills within the curriculum and ultimately raise the numerical awareness in all areas across the school. I carry out the day to day running of the department and work very closely with my team. It is very important to me that I fully support and encourage the members of my department to excel in their work and develop an excellent ethos of hard work, high expectations leading to high rewards (exam results!) This follows through to the students and the high expectations we, as a team, have of them. I have also introduced Further Mathematics to the A Level programme of my current school, which has enabled me to offer further CPD to my staff, and to develop a richer mathematics for the advanced students.I have a proven track record of raising standards through successful middle leadership and management roles in the last three schools notable Ashcroft School the Key stage 3 result was the highest ever the school got in Luton (July 2004). When I joined The Cornelius Vermuyden School in April 2005 as HOD immediately the result started to improve due to my clear tracking and monitoring of data.
My ability to recognise key issues and to act upon them. E.g. Using the master tracker I developed to identify year 11 borderline pupils and liaised with the Deputy Head (who is my line manager), I coordinate booster classes, one to one tutoring and meeting with parents and pupils. Analysing the KS2 data I realised that the year 10s were saturated with levels 4s. I was able to develop a structured scheme of work which my team was able to deliver to Year 10, which resulted in 62% A* - C. 50% of these pupils are currently completing GCSE Statistics which help with the 5 A* to C overall. I continue to develop strategies for ensuring improved progression across levels in mathematics and this is reflected in the current schemes of work, e.g. identify where key indicators of pupils’ progress are taught and where they will be assessed. Vulnerable Groups: (Special Needs, Statemented School Action + School Action), G&T, EAL and FSM. I am presently working with senior leaders, the HOD of English and the maths’ team to provide intervention, booster and revision programmes where pupils’ needs cannot be met in normal lessons. I also use result plus and raise online to help to identify pupils that are not making their expected level of progress and to identify area of weakness in the school.
As part of the department numeracy drive we ran very successful Number Day about the NSPCC, with an assembly that made students aware of the support available to them if they were ever in need of help. All teachers and pupils in the school were involved and we donated all the monies collected to the NSPCC.
I was able to help colleagues develop their confidence in the classroom and the delivery of lesson at a high standard. I am always committed to the vision that the Head Teacher has directed for the development of high quality teaching and learning within the school community.
I taught Statistics for 1 hour each Friday to the more abled students, which saw them getting 100% A* - C. I also conducted two years of 1 to 1 tutoring which was done on Saturdays.
I am able to motivate and inspire students and staff by developing a unique style of classroom manner. I have trained a number of trainee teachers who have been successful in gaining a teaching post.
I am able to work with and in a team also respond to change in my role or challenge given to me I was able to support and build up the confidence of a colleague who was having problem with the skills test
(ICT and Maths) She passed both tests and successfully passed her PGCE.
I managed the production of an annual departmental handbook, detailing policies, schemes of work, etc to support members of the department in high quality teaching and learning.
I initiate and develop the provision of extracurricular activities linked to the specialism. (Maths Club)
Last year I attend and complete the TAM Core at the South Bank University which was partly delivered by MEI. I work closely with the Herts for Learning attending any HOD training. I also make links with the Further maths co-ordinator who worked at Cambridge University. I am always tracking the DFE and the Exam boards for latest updates and changes in maths. In November 2013 I was able to enter two G&T 1 year 7 and 1 year 10 both pupils got A* in their GCSE and personal programs was put in place working closely with the Further Maths Coordinator.
