Personal Description:

I completed my Masters in Chemistry (MChem) in 2014 which included a year in industry working in Belgium, and I am currently doing my PhD in bionanotechnology, both at the University of Strathclyde. I am also an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Tutoring Experience:

I am a demonstrator in the First Year Undergraduate Teaching Lab at the University of Strathclyde. This involves taking a group of 10-13 first year chemistry students every week and conducting an experiment. I am required to explain the experiment, answer any questions they have, and supervise their work to ensure they are being safe. I am also on hand to help out with any coursework they are struggling with.

I have also helped with school groups and teachers who have come to the university for fun laboratory classes and for help with experiments in the National 5 curriculum.

I am a registered STEM ambassador, which means that I have a PVG disclosure check and have been active in various public engagement activities to try and get more young people interested and involved in science subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

I found chemistry at school very difficult to grasp at first and understand that it can seem to be a very complicated subject. However, once I had found my own way of learning everything seemed to fall in to place and I developed a love for the subject.

Everyone learns differently, so the most important thing is to tailor the lessons to the tutee's needs. This could be through reading and discussing the course notes, doing past papers, using diagrams and models etc. First we would pinpoint problem areas of the course and focus on these with respects to the goals of the tutee, whether this is working towards and exam or project deadline. I'm a relaxed, approachable and patient person, and understand that mistakes are part of the learning process.
