Personal Description:

I am a fully qualified professional teacher with over 15 years experience as a private tutor. I have taught in both the private and state sectors and have been Head of Department at a prestigious prep. school. I have a PGCE, Cert.Ed, CELTA, Ba.Hons (UEA) certificates in Counselling (City and Guilds) and an enhanced CRB.
Subject to an initial assessment, I devise a personal programme/scheme of work for each student which aims to build confidence and develop skills. As the learning process is rarely linear, I aim to support my students by helping them to capitalise on their particular learning styles so that swift progress can be made. My students are encouraged to develop stratagem and techniques which can be adapted to both class work and exams. Therefore, each student is able to fulfil their potential. If that sounds horribly serious, I can also boast that all my students appear to enjoy their sessions; rarely have I encountered truculence! To conclude, each of my students in treated as a unique individual. The results speak for themselves. Students predicted a fail at GCSE English have gone on to achieve a very respectable B. Others have lifted their predicted C Pass to A and even A* grades.
I have also facilitated students to achieve scholarships to eminent schools (Harrow/Radley/Charterhouse) and supported others with interview technique to top universities.
However, it's not all about the top achievers! A little girl of 7 developed a more positive attitude towards Maths whilst working with me, improved commensurately with her burgeoning enthusiasm for the subject… - and this achievement had as much merit as any of the others listed.
I have two daughters: An English grad. from Exeter university now working at The House of Lords and the other completing her Masters degree in Politics at St. Andrews.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been working as a private tutor since 1992, when my first child was born. Subsequent to achieving my Cert.Ed and PGCE, I have worked as a teacher and Head of Department in both the state and private sector. I added to my professional qualifications( Ba.Hons- LGSMD )recently, having successfully achieved the highest grade with Cambridge University's CELTA course.
I currently tutor my specialist subjects on a one-to-one basis:
KS2 English and Maths
11+
KS3/4- English Lit and Lang.
A Level English Lit.
Drama at all levels
EAL/EFL

Tutoring Approach:

I tutor on either a 1:1 basis. Each one hour session is student-centred and pacey. My students are given a range of relevant exercises which are undertaken during the session, corrected, and revised. I aim to build appropriate rapport with my students and as such, all appear to enjoy the session and achieve it's objectives. My approach is eminently flexible, dealing with students who are struggling with a subject or stretching students who are gifted and talented.
