This is how 2 referees rated Colin:
I am a maths tutor from the Wordsley (West Midlands) area.
I have a passion for mathematics, computer programming, and science in general.
Tutoring is very rewarding for me, especially when I can boost the students' confidence in the subject and give them a better appreciation of why maths doesn't have to be boring or difficult.
I have been able to tutor a small group of students during my last year at university.
This was quite enjoyable, but I have never wanted to teach a class of children.
I have several years tutoring experience with 3 agencies, many of the students I've tutored have since been able to pass their maths gsce/a-level exams with grades they have been aiming for.
My approach to tutoring is quite simple;
Firstly I believe the tutor should show enthusiasm for what they are tutoring and keep the student interested and involved in the problems/questions being tackled. I feel the tutor should always be friendly, but should also be able to push the students to get them working harder, similar to how a personal trainer would push you to keep running.
Secondly, as maths has an upside-down pyramid like structure with each layer built upon the layer below it, if the student does not understand something, instead of just giving the answer, I'll ask more questions to uncover why. Often the problem is lower down in the pyramid, so it makes sense to fix these easier problems first, so that the original problem higher up in the pyramid can be understood.
