I Offer Foreign Language Tuition & Business Studies
I've been using French Spanish and German for over 25 years in a business context, so for learners looking for a practical rather than academic application of the languages, I have extensive experience and am also up to date with current colloquial and idiomatic language.
I've also learnt a number of other European and non-European languages as an adult, so am acutely aware of the nature and process of making progress even when the going gets tough as it inevitably does at times when trying to acquire a new language. This is where a good tutor can get you onto the next level!
A significant part of my early working career was spent in Northern Germany and also in the Greater Paris area in France and I am naturally very enthusiastic about the culture and way of life in both countries and how it finds expression through their language.
In addition to formal academic qualifications in both languages, I have taken and passed the professional Institute of Linguists exams.
In addition to language tuition, I also offer Business Studies up to Degree level as I am the holder of a first classs BSc honours degree in Business Administration combined with many years at senior level in organizations using this knowledge
Finally, I also hold the enhanced certificate from the government's Disclosure and Barring Service (what was the CRB check)
Familiar with teaching adult learners and school pupils at GCSE and A level standard, plus currently tutor degree undergraduates in both Business Studies and foreign languages
My preference is to promote a comfortable environment encouraging the student to speak and listen as much as possible without worrying about making mistakes. I will offer suggestions to enhance vocabulary and explain more complex structures so that the student can use them comfortably and instinctively after the lesson.
I work my students hard and have high expectations for them, but my teaching style is informal and hopefully stimulating
I always agree the lesson objectives before we start so that my students can measure their own progress
With more advanced students, I encourage as much of the lesson as possible to be conducted in the foreign language to create a feeling of immersion for an hour or two.
I am keen that students actively build and then use their enhanced vocabulary in conversation using role plays for example
I am more than happy to chat on agreed themes or topics to develop fluency and conversation skills or work though curriculum set texts if the key objective is to pass an exam
Wherever possible, I like to use authentic source material which I will provide such as newspapers, excerpts from films, TV news, contemporary literature etc
I will also help and correct pronunciation which is critical but often overlooked in the UK when teaching and learning foreign languages
In terms of Business Studies, I like to use my practical knowledge and experience to add colour to the academic theory to bring it to life
