Wandsworth Tutor

My name is Colin and I am a secondary school Science Teacher. I completed my degree at Edinburgh University achieving a 2:1 in Microbiology & Infection. After this I moved to London to complete a graduate recruitment scheme called TeachFirst which places university graduates in secondary schools. Since then I have taught Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths up to GCSE level. In my spare time I enjoy playing and watching a variety of sports. I have coached cricket and rugby teams as an extracurricular activity for students and also ran and organised the Science aspect of a Saturday morning school.

Tutoring Experience

I have been teaching and tutoring for ten years now covering a range of students, subjects and levels. I am currently a secondary school Science teacher in a London school. I am also responsible for teaching and planning a number of Easter Revision courses in Science at one of London's leading fifth and sixth-form colleges. I hold the position of expert Science examiner for the Edexcel exam board. I have a current enhanced CRB check and also have excellent references available from my Head of Department and Deputy Head Teacher of my current school.

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring approach is tailored to an individual student’s requirements. I have had good experience in teaching, tutoring and catering for a wide range of abilities and needs. As a teacher I have access to a vast array of resources and I am knowledgeable about the different awards, syllabuses and examining bodies. I employ a variety of different methods and techniques to help a student acquire skills, procedures and knowledge, secure understanding, develop reasoning, process information, address misconceptions and promote problem solving. However I find that it is combining these with some of the softer skills that I possess which have helped me guide students to their desired goals and successes. These include a good sense of humour, an ability to empathise with students, the means to encourage and motivate and the capability to build up confidence in a topic or subject. I also focus on exam technique and preparation as I believe that this is an important aspect that is often neglected in classroom teaching. Most importantly, the sessions must be varied and enjoyable as this creates the perfect environment to ensure learning and progression takes place.
