I am a fifty four years old male with a partner and three adult daughters. I had a variety of jobs before deciding to return to education whilst in my thirties. I graduated with a degree in English from the University of Teesside and have since made a career out of teaching English related subjects.
I like to think that I'm a friendly, approachable person, with a good sense of humour. I've taught students ranging in age from 14- 80 and have had excellent pass rates and feedback over my career.
As of April 25th 2014 I am the BBC's 2014 Mastermind champion. My specialist subject in the grand final was Philip Larkin, a poet who is part of the curriculum at both GCSE and A-Level.
I have almost 20 years teaching experience working mainly in the F. E. sector. In that time I have designed and delivered a range of English-based courses. These include Functional Skills ( E3 to L3), GCSE English Literature/Language, AS/A Level Literature, Access to Higher Education and specialist L5 literacy modules.
At present, after my success with Mastermind I am actively supporting my local council in promoting the importance of education; in addition a number of schools have invited me to give talks on this subject in order to inspire their pupils.
I believe that it is necessary for a tutor to have a number of skills in order to be successful. He/she needs to be well-organised, conscientious and be able to communicate clearly and effectively. However, I tend to think that subject knowledge and being able to relate to the student and their needs are of paramount importance.
