Personal Description:

I am the mother of three ( now grown up) children - all of whom have gone onto higher education. Two of my children needed private tutoring to help them with their studies (in Maths)and I don't think either of them would have passed their GCSEs without this additional help. I am a graduate of Bangor University in North Wales for my undergraduate degree and UWTSD for my PG Cert. I currently work at UWTSD as a Study Skills Lecturer and Study Assistant supporting under-graduates with specific learning differences (such as Autism, Dyslexia ) in their studies - these subjects vary from Archaeology through to Philosophy, Business Studies through to Theology. I am also a Mental Health Mentor at the University. I enjoy the work very much and find it rewarding to build up a relationship with undergraduates of all ages and encourage and assist them to achieve their best. I am based in Llanharan and I have a current DBS check. Whilst I am not fluent in Welsh, I speak colloquial Welsh and am able to have short, simple conversations in the language. I live with my partner and our two, very friendly dogs.

Tutoring Experience:

With a PG Cert, since 2013 I have been supporting undergraduates - encouraging them and assisting them to complete dissertations and assignments by helping them to develop solid study skills and manage their time effectively. I provide guidance with grammar and proof reading strategies and with reading, spelling and writing fluency. Having a Coaching and Mentoring Certificate I have also worked with students and colleagues to improve their employability skills and assisted them with planning their personal development and finding work. I recently had a private tutoring arrangement with an A level pupil who was taking A levels in Music Tech and Drama and with a year 6 boy who needed to improve his reading and spelling in readiness for secondary school. I have completed a module in Basic Skills Tuition and volunteered at a Community Centre in Cardiff, working with adults to improve their reading and writing abilities. I have completed an Open University Module in Understanding the Autism Spectrum and I have considerable experience working with young people on the Autism Spectrum and am an Associate Member of the Dyslexia Guild. I am equally happy to receive requests for support from older people who are returning to education and lacking in confidence or worried about what study skills they will need.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to treat every student as an individual; to learn as much as possible about them and their specific situation and to tailor my support to their individual needs. For all students who need support with their school or university work I use the same textbooks and follow the same course as the school in order to provide coherence and consistency. My attitude is that learning can be fun - as long as the student feels comfortable with his/her tutor, the learning environment is safe and the work is progressing at the student's pace. I am happy to take enquiries for tutoring for all age groups including adults who are returning to education and feel that they could do with some additional support. I am happy to tutor at my home or to travel short distances.
