Personal Description:

I am a 3rd Year PhD student in Neuroscience at King's College London. Prior to my PhD studies I have obtained a Distinction in my MRes in Developmental Neurobiology from King's College London in 2014 and a First Class BSc(Hons) in Neuroscience from University of Sussex in 2013. Throughout my academic career I have been consistently at the top of my class and have won several awards. In addition, during my PhD studies I have attended several international conferences and courses at the cutting edge of science.

Tutoring Experience:

Tutor and Demonstrator on 1st year undergraduate Biochemistry and Statistics courses at King's College London.

I created and delivered a lesson as part of a team based on my research at King's to local academies in Southwark; I subsequently mentored students during summer research projects on a one-to-one basis.

For the past two years I have also worked at City and Islington College during A-levels as an Exam Invigilator and Additional Learning Support. I worked with students who required additional learning support before and during their exams.

I have informally tutored family members for GCSE science and mathematics.

I also have provided mentorship of any students that carry out research projects in our lab as part of their university work.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that any concept in mathematics or science is understandable by any student. What is critical is that the environment is relaxed and not stressful in addition to connecting the underlying concept to the student's every day life. I have found that many people freeze up when confronted with new ideas or concepts in science or maths, but once they have some examples they come to realise that they understand the concept quite easily.

I go into any teaching assuming the above. The next challenge is to help the student turn the knowledge they have gained into results. Understanding how to directly answer questions and how to structure responses on an exam gives them the opportunity to show what they have learned and achieve high results. Much as learning the subject matter, studying, note-taking and test-taking are all skills that can be learnt. I focus on these by providing examples of note taking and having the student's practice responding to questions from past papers.
