Personal Description:

I have spent a life-time in teaching at all levels from primary schools to university, and am now early-retired. I am still in love with my subjects and with teaching them. I am an avid listener to all kinds of classical music (except opera!) and am a keen pianist and organist. I greatly enjoy reading just about anything, but mainly novels, philosophy and theology. I wish I had the time to read more biography, and I admit and regret that I have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to poetry.

I enjoy walking and being in my workshop. Though I am not a very good woodworker my bookshelves stay up! I am a great armchair traveller!

Tutoring Experience:

Fifteen years in a Sixth Form College teaching mainly A Level philosophy and religious studies, but also some psychology and citizenship.

Prior to working in the Sixth Form College, I taught maths up to Common Entrance level and led PGCE seminars at an institute of education.

Prior to the Common Entrance maths and the PGCE work, I taught music and maths up to A level in a public school, and prior to that I taught maths and music in primary schools.

I first started tutoring twenty-five years ago.

Tutoring Approach:

The two principles of teaching/tutoring are to start from when the pupil/tutee is and to have a clear idea of where he or she needs to get to. From these follow both what needs to be done and how it is to be done. For example, so often I have found that maths tutees have a method but no very clear idea of how or why the method works; inevitably sooner or later they come unstuck. "Where the tutee is" includes how they feel about the subject; do they have a negative attitude to the subject? do they really understand concepts adequately, and very much associated with this, do they have and are they able to use an appropriate vocabulary? In maths, technique is important and goes hand in hand with conceptual understanding. So, perhaps confidence building is required and this is helped by making sure that concepts and techniques are properly understood.

In philosophy and religious studies, language and essay-writing skills come very much to the fore, and tutees must be encouraged to write and speak accurately. Again, of course, concepts and techniques are part of the equipment of good philosophy and religious studies students, and care needs to be taken to see that these are in place. Philosophy is a technical subject and it is essential to having a good grasp of the techniques and definitions which are required to do good philosophy.

I believe, that the best progress is made when the tutor is able to get the tutee "on side" with regard to the topic in question. So, I aim to be friendly (not familiar) but firm, to be thorough in terms of what the tutee is able to assimilate, to challenge but not to intimidate, to instruct where necessary and to lead the pupil to discover for him or herself where that too would provide important and lasting learning experiences. Finally, I take care to ensure that though the lesson can be relaxed it is always on target. I try to enthuse tutees with the subject, since with enjoyment comes a renewed sense of motivation and possibility and these lead to achievement. As I have said, I still love my subjects and I want my pupils to do so too.
