Background: 27 years as a research scientist. Retrained as a maths school teacher in 2002. 7 years tutoring one-to-one in state schools and 13 years (ongoing) private tutoring GCSE and A level. Currently tutoring part-time at university.
Have written two GCSE aids - Maths Friend (Foundation and Higher) published 2014.
Teaching maths in secondary school 2003-2004.
Supply teaching 2004-2007.
2004-2006:Hospital treatment for lymphoma. Currently in remission.
From 2006, ongoing: Private tutoring Maths GCSE and A level.
2008-2015: Part-time Maths tutoring in state schools.
2015 ongoing: Maths and Stats support tutor in university (mainly first and second year engineers and scientists).
I see one-to-one tutoring as the time to identify and solve the problems that students have with understanding a topic. Dialogue is most important.
I encourage the student to keep asking questions (especially what might be thought of as 'dumb' questions and therefore not asked in a classroom).
I keep to a minimum the amount of practice questions. If the student 'gets it' we move on.
My key aim is to find an approach that suits the individual student.
