This is how 2 referees rated Christopher:
Hello! My name is Christopher, and I am a 23-year-old Classics graduate. I have Latin to degree level, and Ancient Greek to about AS-level equivalent. The ancient world is by no means my only passion, but it was one of my first, and I enjoy nothing more than sharing my knowledge with those who wish to learn.
I also have very basic conversational Modern Greek.
I am currently in part-time employment teaching the GCSE Latin classes at a boys' comprehensive school in Hertford. I also run a beginners' Latin club at another secondary school, and volunteer at a village Primary school.
I do have experience of teaching one-to-one. However, this has been exclusively within my circle of friends and family; I received positive feedback, but this may have been somewhat biased!
My first step when conducting a one-to-one (or small group) lesson is to find out what the student has enjoyed most about the subject, and why. Then I aim to use those same aspects to teach the areas which they find more challenging.
I always try to inject some story, fact or analysis of the Greek and Roman world into every discussion of grammar or vocabulary, because the languages can only be fully understood within context. I believe that a variety of approaches are needed, especially for information that is usually presented in tables; I have never been convinced of the efficacy of rote-learning and chanting. Students of both the Roman and Greek civilisations are lucky to have a wide range of electronic and interactive tools to assist their learning. I often use these myself and would gladly incorporate them into my teaching method.
