History Of Art
I have a solid understanding of how to approach academic writing, having recently completed my PhD at the University of Essex. I have also contributed articles, reviews and essays to a range of publications including Creative Review, Print Quarterly, the Journal of Modern Italian Studies and the catalogue of the exhibition 'Vues d’en Haut' at the Centre Pompidou, Metz.
It can often seem a daunting task to impose order on one's ideas when beginning an essay or dissertation, and to retain a sense of perspective on one’s work as the writing process continues. Whatever your field of study, I can help you frame and structure your argument, be a sounding-board for your ideas and bring an objective, trained editorial eye to your finished text.
If your tuition needs are more closely related to Art History or Museum Studies, I have extensive knowledge of and experience in these fields. My area of specialisation is European modernism (Italian Futurism having been the subject of my BA, MA and PhD degrees) and I am also Assistant Curator at a major London museum.
My role at the museum involves giving regular talks to school groups, university students and cultural societies, as well as providing guidance and assistance to researchers visiting its library. I have also supervised a PhD student as part of the AHRC’s Collaborative Doctoral Award scheme, providing academic advice and support during the writing of the thesis, and helping the student turn her research into a coherent exhibition project for the museum upon completion.
I have led seminars for students in the Italian Studies department at UCL and the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Royal Holloway. I have also regularly taken part in roundtable events concerning aspects of curatorial practice at Sotheby’s Institute.
In January 2015 I was involved in the Courtauld Institute's Public Lectures Programme.
I believe that study sessions should be informal, but serious. Any student who has registered with this website is clearly committed to their work, and should expect the same level of commitment from their tutor. For this reason, I like to talk to students before starting tuition in order to discover exactly what assistance they require and to agree a plan of study with them. I do not charge for this initial ‘consultation’, nor do I charge for time spent reading essays prior to study sessions.
I have no preconceptions as to what students’ ideas concerning particular topics should be, and indeed encourage them to challenge established narratives. In order to enable their ideas to be communicated more effectively, I stress the importance of clear, concise, jargon-free language in written work.
