Personal Description:

I am currently the Head of Chemistry at Hall Cross Academy in Doncaster. I am also a Specialist Leader of Education. There are only a handful of SLEs in Science and we get sent to other schools to fix problems their department may have. Basically that means I go into failing schools and advise how their teachers should change their way of teacher to really connect with the young people today whilst still teaching a full time curriculum timetable. According to the Government website, Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) are outstanding middle and senior leaders who have the skills to support individuals or teams in similar positions in other schools. They understand what outstanding leadership practice in their area of expertise looks like and are skilled in helping other leaders to achieve it in their own context.

I'm an 'Outstanding' teacher who prides myself as being enthusiastic and motivated about my subjects. I love teaching and love watching young people develop into talented scientists. I have a lot of teaching experience and hold an impressive track record of having students that exceed national set targets. Because of that I have sent hundreds of students to study science related subjects at some of the best universities in the world.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching since 2000 when I completed my BSc in Science education. Here I learnt how to teach all 3 disciplines of Science to University level. Since then I have taught all the Sciences from year 7 all the way up to year 13. I have also taught Maths, ICT and Music Technology.

In terms of tutoring experience I started tutoring last year after my nephew was struggling with his GCSE science exams. He increased his grade from an E to a B in five 2 hour sessions. It has allowed him to go to to the 6th form that he really wanted to. I found this very rewarding so I started tutoring a few more people. I have had other students performing equally as well, with one girl moving up from a D to getting A*s and scoring 100% on 2 separate exam papers in her resits. I have since tutored mainly A-level Chemistry which the vast majority of those I have tutored achieving a grade A in their final exams. All students beat their target grade and met their university offer tariff.

Tutoring Approach:

The vast majority of students that I tutor appreciate the fact that I help build up their confidence in a subject as well as their knowledge and understanding. This involves designing a course tailoring for each individual need. I have had a lot of success in this as I mentioned above. I am friendly and approachable whilst at the same time fairly demanding. I don't intend to tutor you for you to make no progress - I'm expecting you to put a lot of effort in as well!

I have a rigorous approach to tutoring and I cover all bases. I ask inquisitive open-ended questions to probe knowledge and current understanding. I ask questions in manner which makes it easy to eliminate misconceptions and incorrect thinking. I prefer students to think laterally about any given problem and then approach familiar problems in a critical, methodical manner. It's important that students leave my sessions understanding why the answers are what they are, not just remember why they are. I like to think that I can put students' minds at ease and make it so students feel comfortable to make mistakes in front of me - this is the best way of correcting any misconceptions a student may have.

I like to perform a series of examination style questions in a way that not only prepares you for exams but also enhances subject knowledge. It is not only important to pass examinations but also prepare students for their next level of education wherever that may be.

I look forward to hearing from you.
