Information About Chris - Sheffield tutor - (1 review)
This is how 3 referees rated Chris:
My interests are varied and I am moving into tutoring to allow myself the novelty of spare time to engage in them. I make wooden swords, cycle, write TV and graphic novel scripts and love graphic and cartoon art. I have worked all my life, from Saturday jobs in Games workshop to several years in scientific research - working on stems cells, cancer and organ grafting. Notedly the laboratory performed work that helped invent the HPV vaccination . I moved into business became a UK product specialist with links to Germany and the Pharmaceutical industry, led extensive adult education schemes and then moved into teaching.
I've taught all ages and abilities for 17 years in the Sheffield and Doncaster area. Though a Biology specialist, for the last two years I've taught Physics to top sets with great results. I've led departments, organised study courses, managed BTec and have never lost my love for Science. I've been a sixth form tutor and mentor, in addition to a highly experienced and accomplished A-level teacher. I have taught AS Chemistry, but it's not my strongest point.
Remembering does not help students to excel. It does not prepare them for higher education (especially A-levels) and leads to frustration and disillusion. I have a million stories and anecdotes (most of them true) to bring a sense of wonder and fun to Science. Students are often terrified by the language and the mathematics of formulae. My approach is to get them to understand first, then all the messy stuff makes sense. Students will be challenged and expected to think and have opinions. I will expect them to argue and convince me that they understand the Science being taught. I am patient and have proven my ability to make learning fun and breath taking. Science can be hard, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.
