Personal Description:

I am a creative person who enjoys wood carving, sewing, knitting, dancing and the outdoors. I have done canoeing, horse riding, orienteering, mountain biking and dancing as part of my teaching. I am also a therapist and support adults with stress and anxiety issues.

Prior to teaching I worked in engineering, advertising, catering and the service industry.

Tutoring Experience:

An English teacher with over 19 years experience. During this time I have taught GCSE English Language and Literature with all the main exam boards, AQA, Edexcel, Welsh Board and OCR. I have also taught Functional Skills English and A Level English. I have taught students with varying abilities from level 8(A*) to below level 1(U). I have worked in high attaining, outstanding schools, schools within the grammar school system, all girls' schools, mixed schools, special schools and colleges. I have also worked with students that have been excluded from school and achieved excellent results with them. I have also worked with students with severe medical conditions, stress and anxiety. I have been a Head of Department and successfully trained, supported and advised other Heads of English in best approaches with Functional Skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in teaching students to their strengths and supporting them in areas they find difficult. Every student is an individual and has a different learning style, therefore the teaching approach needs to be individual. I believe in giving students the skills they need to become independent learners to achieve their subjects. By listening carefully and responding to the learning needs of a student educational barriers can often be overcome. Sometimes using hobbies that students enjoy can make the subject more interesting. For other students learning English through topic areas can beneficial.

I therefore, like to see what the student is capable of achieving and then creating an individual plan for them to work to.
