I am a highly experienced teacher who is passionate about ensuring that children are learning to the best of their ability, in whatever learning environment they are in. I love watching people of any age learn new things. I love learning myself, so enjoy reading and investigating new ideas. I initially trained as a secondary maths teacher in America, having gained my Bachelor of Arts in mathematics (1985, Summa cum laude). I moved to England and transferred my teaching qualifications through the Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (Sussex University), achieving QTS for KS2 and KS3. I currently work as a Primary SCITT Tutor (Initial Teacher Training-ITT).
Most of my recent teaching experience is in a primary setting, mainly KS2 (Years 3-6, age 7-11), as a classroom teacher and Phase Learning Leader. I have taught all primary subjects across Years 2-6, with special expertise in SATs preparation for Year 6 and Year 2 under the new National Curriculum. Previously, I have worked as a tutor for all primary subjects as well as KS3 and KS4 maths, with a focus on preparing young people for maths GCSE exams. Although I began my teaching career in the American education system, I have tutored and taught in the UK since the early 1990s, so am fully conversant with the new National Curriculum a well as educational terminology and technical language of British English.
In my experience, people often learn better if they are enjoying what they are doing. It has always been my goal to make learning as enjoyable as possible and I try to teach in a fun, enthusiastic and relaxing, yet purposeful, way. I firmly believe that people learn best when teaching is targeted at their specific needs and personal learning styles. Another crucial step to successful learning comes from developing a positive relationship between tutor and tutee. Building a learner's confidence is also key to the learner's ability to assimilate new knowledge and practise new skills. As a tutor, I want to ensure that I teach in such a way as to maximise confidence and achievement for those with whom I am working.
