Personal Description:

Hi everyone,

My name is Cerys and I'm currently studying undergraduate Physics at the University of Birmingham. I am thoroughly enjoying my degree and the challenges it brings with it, and while it's great to learn new things on a daily basis, (as cheesy as it may sound) I love being able to share my passion for education with others.

From a young age, I have always had a huge interest in the sciences, taking part in extra curricular activities, school trips, and taking to opportunity to tutor young students at school. Whether you are a high flyer who needs to be stretched, or perhaps a student who is struggling to get to grips with key concepts, I aim for my lessons to be fun, engaging, and build the confidence you need to see big improvements in all areas of your education.

Tutoring Experience:

During the past 6 years, I have gained teaching experience in a large variety of different capacities. From a year working as a tutor at Explore learning, to teaching at my local dance school, to offering one to one tuition at students houses, I have had the opportunity to gain experience working with children of every age (3-18) and have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge that each new environment brings. I believe that the diversity of these experiences has made me much more versatile as a teacher, and I now have a range of teaching techniques which I can call upon to aid any child.

I have a valid DBS check, and references are available on request.

Tutoring Approach:

Due to the nature of the subjects I teach (Maths, Physics and Chemistry), I am a firm believer in understanding based learning. During my time as your tutor, I will aim to take my time to explain difficult concepts in detail in a variety of ways which best suit your own approach to learning. While I will always be here to answer your questions, I also believe that independent learning is a very important part of the development process, and students will always be encouraged to fill in some of the blanks themselves. As a lot of students come to me with very low confidence in their own abilities, I find that this kind of learning can really show them that they know a lot more than they think!

In older years as you prepare for important exams, I believe that all students should be given the tools not only to repeat the necessary steps to get the right answer, but also to understand why we are taking them, and how these processes can be applied to other questions. This is after all what makes a truly great scientist, and I hope to leave you with skills that will last a lifetime.

I believe the service that a young tutor like myself can provide is truly unique. As I am a recent school graduate, students often find me less intimidating and more relatable than 'real' adults, meaning they have a greater confidence to ask questions, allowing themselves to gain much more from the experience. At the same time, recent studying means I am completely up to date with all of the exams, and can offer plenty of advice on my own revision techniques!

Finally, I would like to add that I do not usually find it necessary to set extra work unless the parent has requested it or I feel it will be useful for consolidation purposes on a particularly tricky topic. I am also very happy to help with school homework if this is an issue for the student.
