Patient, caring, and determined to help every child succeed. With over 10 years teaching experience and further Learning Mentor experience, I aim to build children's confidence whilst breaking down barriers to their own learning. The children in my class are very familiar with the phrase 'Work hard - Play hard', as I am a great believer that although we may not always find things easy, we can find a fun way to figure it out together!
I practice what I preach… which is why I'm currently trying to learn to play the guitar!
I started my career as a Learning Mentor, helping children (and their families) uncover their barriers to learning and work through them, both academically and emotionally. I then became a Primary Teacher, where during 10 years I was fortunate enough to work with all age ranges from Rec-Y6. I have successfully led Y1 Phonics checks, KS1 Sats and KS2 Sats. I was responsible for leading Maths across the school, ICT and technology, as well as the creative subjects. I have worked closely with both children with SEN and also children who were capable and required a bigger challenge to be pushed further. I am also a Level 3 Forest Schools Leader which reflects my belief that all children can achieve when given the time and self belief.
I strongly believe in a positive behaviour managment strategy where children are praised for good and even the smallest achievents are celebrated. This not only builds self confidence, but also allows the child to build a positive association with 'learning'.
I thoroughly enjoy finding unique and creative ways to engage and excite the children about learning through creative and technological means. Every child is different so needs a different approach, which isn't always manageable within a class of 30+ children. One to One tuition allows the time for your child to have full attention to their needs.
I love having the opportunity to work with children who find aspects of normal every day schooling a challenge for whatever reason that may be, and thus, utilise my skills as both a Learning Mentor and an experienced creative and innovative Teacher to help them to achieve their best and beyond.
My approach very much depends upon the child - not all children learn in the same way so it may incorporate practical activities, memory games, watching and repeating, finding the mistakes, rehearsal of skills or a mixture of all! I am a trained coach, which means I understand the value of the children discovering ideas, answers and concepts themselves through careful guidance and clever questioning - they will not be force fed facts to simply recall, instead they will fully understand the 'why'.
It is important to make every minute count in a calm, safe and fun environment and more importantly ensuring that the child is engaged and wants to take part - this involves finding and incorporating what they like and are interested in, turning each aspect into a stepping stone towards the final goal. If the child is invested in their aims then they are far more likely to succeed.
Every child has the potential to succeed, you just need to find the right key to unlock it and ensure that they believe in themselves!
The first session will take on a more informal approach discussing wants, needs and expectations from the child, parents and myself. We will also work through a basic baseline (informally!) to identify gaps or weak areas and importantly areas of strength. The following sessions would then be personally tailored based on all of that information, and would be adaptable on a continuous basis.
