Personal Description:

I'm 24 and a Law graduate from Oxford with an MA in Medical Ethics and Medical Law from Oxford. At Oxford I was a successful competitive debater and accumulated a significant amount of experience teaching the skill to primary, secondary and University students. This has helped me in my role as tutor to engage enthusiastically with students and to disseminate information in a way that contributes to understanding and retention without resorting to rote-learning.

Tutoring Experience:

Law
- My focus areas as a law tutor are on Medical Law and Jurisprudence.
- I currently tutor two law students and we work on coursework and general exam preparation in medical law, jurisprudence, tort law and contract law.

11+
- Over December 2015 and January 2016 I helped two students to prepare for 11+ entrance exams for various competitive London day schools. They focused on exam technique and how best to 'impress the examiner' and pick up marks during examination. For one student, enthusiasm and imagination sometimes led her not to fulfil her potential within the structure of the 11+. As such, lessons were focused on harnessing her natural talent and disciplining her writing process.
- I also work with an 11 year old who is trying to improve her essay writing technique in creative writing.

English
- I work with a GCSE student when she is home from boarding school. We are working to consistently improve her performance in English Language and Literature, with a focus on comprehension and composition. We have intense sessions covering significant ground on exam strategy and approaches to thinking critically and writing well.
- I have 4 other GCSE students in English with whom I work on a similar basis as they all attend boarding schools and so I see them over the holidays. These students perform at varying levels so I am experienced in helping some students push for top grades at competitive schools and also in helping other students students to catch up to the standard of their class and to gain confidence in their abilities. When working with students who are struggling, my main focus is to build confidence in their ability to excel in reading and writing by providing a number of strategies and techniques which give students a way of approaching questions asked in the exam.
- I have just completed a week of intensive tutoring for GSCE English on The Merchant of Venice and Spies, by Michael Frayn.

- I previously tutored a student preparing to take his Junior Certificate (GSCE equivalent) English Exam in June 2015 aiming to move from a B/C grade to an A grade. We worked on improving the quality of his work through better planning of answers by looking at their overall structure in addition to the composition of each sentence and paragraph. We prepared Romeo and Juliet and Of Mice and Men. I corrected practice exams papers and we went through my comments in detail to find areas for improvement.
- I also previously tutored a foreign student in her second year of secondary school. Our main focus was improving her English language skills and ensuring that she stayed on top of lessons at school. I integrated expanding her vocabulary with work on her studied texts (Romeo and Juliet and To Kill a Mockingbird).

French
- I teach a 7 year old introductory French through engaging and exciting lessons to provoke her interest in learning the language while providing a solid foundation for strong future academic work in the subject.
- During school holidays I tutor 3 students intensively in GCSE french with a focus on oral work and exam strategy in language exams.

- I previously tutored a 6th year (Year 12 equivalent) student for his Oral and Written French exam.

Irish
- I tutored a student preparing to take his Junior Certificate (GCSE equivalent) Irish Oral and Written Exam in June 2015.

Other
- In 2008/2009 I tutored a 1st year student daily after school. I helped with homework and supplemented his learning from the school day. Often, this meant approaching concepts from different angles than those in the textbook and using interactive modes of teaching. Towards the exam period we focused on revision techniques and exam strategy with great success.
- I have experience in helping with Oxbridge interview preparation.

Debating

- Debate Mate Mentor with a primary school in Lewisham
- Debate Coach at Wesley College, Dublin from January till June 2015. I was responsible for Junior and Senior weekly House Meetings, we worked through a variety of motions each week. I prepped students for public speaking and debating competitions and was responsible for their welfare and performance at those competitions.
- Ran intensive debate training for secondary school students at King’s College School, Madrid in March 2013. I also ran workshops on the Oxford Admissions Process and Life at Oxford. The school was very happy with my performance.
-Taught at an international debating program (DAPDI) in Rotterdam in July 2012.

Tutoring Approach:

I think that what is most important when giving lessons is to tailor my approach to the individual student. I am happy to take direction on what it is you want to achieve over the hour or to provide direction when you're not sure where to start! I am flexible and responsive during teaching and work very hard to make every hour of tutoring effective and enjoyable. I am happy to provide intensive exam oriented lessons and also more general subject work for those needing a little extra help with a certain subject or managing the demands of secondary education.

Even when focusing on a particular topic, I try to draw out general principles and exam technique. This is where I think the value in tutoring really lies, in giving students a sense of context in their work and keeping their learning oriented to what kinds of questions they might have to answer in exams.

I understand the daunting nature of sitting exams but I aim to make the process of learning rewarding and effective. I believe that with strategic and well-planned lessons, any subject can become accessible to students of all abilities, and I never underestimate the role that confidence plays in improving a student's academic abilities.
