Personal Description:

I am an American, though I have been in the UK since 1981, I have worked in Military Intelligence, Acting and all aspects of Theatrical Production, and Teaching (by far the most glamourous, or at least most useful of my three careers). I am on the Festival committees for the Suffolk, Sudbury and Bury St.Edmunds Warrenhill Festivals. I have been a member of the Bury St. Edmunds Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society since 1982, currently a committee member, often directing, choreographing or supporting backstage when not on-stage. I enjoy reading, travelling and cooking, also swimming and exercising (when I can find time… ). Latest CRB: March 2010, Scottish Disclosure: Sept 2010.

Tutoring Experience:

I have worked as a Tutor, Coach and Workshop Leader all of my adult life and turned to teaching full-time as my acting 'career' started drying up. I have worked in various State and private schools in the UK (and also abroad) and am very familiar with the GCSE and A Level requirements for many different boards (including IB). I have taught Drama, English, Humanities and Sociology all to GCSE and A Level. I teach LAMDA Speech and Drama grades (at all levels) and two of my pupils used their Communication Awards to aid their sucessful applications into Cambridge University. I have provided private tutorials in many differing circumstances, in Bahrain I was tutoring two members of the (extended) Royal Family, last term it was Yr9 pupils in Hackney.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in the positive relationship between teacher and pupil, I try to engage my students to think and develop their own positive relationship to the subject, to become 'self-actuated' learners. I believe good teaching, whether one-to-one or in classes, is about guiding students through the forest of information available, pointing oout the important trees along the way, letting them get 'off the beaten track' to explore for themselves, and (if necessary) re-directing them towards the goal to be accomplished by the end, helping them to develop the skills to handle what they see and learn along the way.
