Maths Lessons in Hove

I am a secondary school maths teacher and private tutor, teaching ages 11-16 key stage three, GCSE (foundation and higher) and Level 2 Further Maths.

I have also tutored adults entering teacher training, for maths GCSE resits and the professional skills test. I have a genuine passion for maths - I love solving puzzles and working through problems, and I believe developing the skill and enjoyment of problem solving can help anyone improve their maths skills.

I am friendly, supportive and patient, and really enjoy helping students develop their skills and confidence with maths.

Tutoring Experience

I was awarded a distinction in PGCE Secondary Mathematics in 2019, and since then have been a full time secondary mathematics teacher. I have taught at every level in secondary maths, from year 7 students still finding their feet with primary school level problems, up to grade 9 GCSE and AQA's Level 2 Further Maths Certificate.

In the past two years, I've supported my GCSE classes to achieve above their target grades in both foundation and higher tier classes, with a third of my higher tier class reaching grade 9, and on average all achieving between one and two grades higher than predicted.

Prior to this, I was a teaching assistant at an independent school in London, supporting secondary school students in their maths and science lessons. This involved one-on-one time with students, helping them approach and work through problems in different ways.

I am a qualified TEFL (English as a Foreign language) teacher, and spent some time volunteering in Vietnam with teenagers and young adults, teaching English through workshops and soft skills training sessions. I worked at a Students' Union for around 6 years, where I gained a training qualification and trained groups of University students and staff, preparing engaging and interactive sessions, facilitating conversation and helping others develop their skills.

Tutoring Approach

I am currently taking students for both regular (one hour once a week) and intensive GCSE revision sessions in the run-up to exams.

With limited time before exams (the first maths exam is Thursday 16th May) it is important that you and I both are clear on what we will work on in our time together. If you already know particular areas you want to start with, I will come to you ready to guide you through the topics you are finding most challenging; alternatively, if you know you need a boost but are not sure how, I will work with you to identify some key areas to strengthen. We will also go through exam question practice and exam techniques.

In order to make the most of our time, and to help you build your independence and confidence, I will often give you some follow-up work to do to build on what we have done in our sessions. This is essential for you to practice your skills, to identify any areas you are struggling with that we can pick up on in the following session, and for you to get used to working on problem solving independently which will be of huge benefit in your exam.

I am also happy to help students create a realistic revision schedule and teach revision techniques.

I can teach in person at the students' home or in the Brighton/Hove library. I may also be able to travel further if there is parking available.
