I am an experienced tutor with many years experience. I have worked as a professional chemist and was linked to a number of universities to provide placements for students. I also have undertaken some training as a tutor. I believe in education as a door opener to a lifetime of opportunities. Now I have retired I am concentrating on tutoring. I have a passion to promote STEM subjects to all.

Tutoring Experience

I am experienced particularly in tutoring Maths, Physics, (which I really enjoy) Chemistry, Combined Science and Study Skills. I tutor via several agencies and I have provided support for parents involved in home schooling. I have also tutored pupils with special needs, such as Aspergers. As a demonstration of my general rapport with young people - I actually run a youth group and I have done so for 30+ years and have organised activities as diverse as crafts to potholing! I have also been involved in mentoring people in computer skills, management, accounting and health and safety skills, as well as being a workplace assessor and trainer.

I have a broad experience of tutoring/mentoring as I am involved in work place tutoring as well as purely academic. I mentor adults in NVQ Business Admin as part of my job, and mentor/train volunteers in a Youth Leadership Qualification as a volunteer. I have also mentored employees in accounting (ACCA and AAT). I also offer my services to companies who wish to raise their empolyee abilities in Maths for use in their employment. I have also been the student liaison when I was working in industry for the large companies I worked for and students undertaking a variety of scientific degrees.at various universities both in the UK and overseas.

Tutoring Approach

I spend the first lesson learning the weaknesses of the student both in the subject to be studied and in the study skills exhibited by the student. I also learn about the student's motivation to learn and the goals they wish to achieve. I try to utilise this in developing a plan to help the student achieve their goals. The teaching methods used are based on the needs of the student, and the subject to be studied. I usually tutor at my home as I have found that students concentrate more when they are outside of their own home environment. It is estimated that 80% of pupils do better when they travel to the tutor. I am also willing to run workplace courses in both basic skills or more specialised subjects, or act as a coach to managers, trainees or entrepreneurs.
