This is how 2 referees rated Carlisle:
I am currently a Postgraduate student in Mathematics at Imperial College. I grew up near Wigton, Cumbria where I studied at the Nelson Thomlinson School, achieving 10 GCSEs (9 A*s, 1 A) and 6 A-levels (5 A*s, 1 A). After completing school, I began studying for my MSci in Mathematics at Imperial College in 2010, and attained a first in 2014, coming 3rd in my year. I am now continuing to study for my PhD in Pure Mathematics. Outside of academics, I enjoy cycling for the university team, and playing trumpet in a jazz band.
I have taught in a variety of different environments to classes of different sizes. Throughout my final year as an undergraduate, I tutored a class of around eight 1st year students once a week. We would go through problems they had encountered during lectures as well as exercises they had received. During this time, I also tutored my younger sister for her A-level Mathematics exam, in which she achieved a C grade as opposed to her predicted E grade. During my Postgraduate degree, I have lectured to a full theatre of around 250 students on a few occasions, though most of my teaching has been in weekly problems classes, where I sit down with students one-to-one and discuss problems they encounter with exercise sheets and lecture notes. I have been tutoring one-to-one regularly since the start of 2016.
Though I believe exam practice and past papers are important for attaining a good mark, I wish to go further with a student to ensure full understanding: discussing a problem is essential if a student is going to fully grasp a concept. This includes building up knowledge from the foundations and finding out exactly where the student’s understanding is, rather than just skating over solutions to exam questions and not appreciating the depth of the subject.
