Personal Description:

I am a professional and friendly private tutor with extensive experience working with some of the top agencies in London & Surrey.

In my four years as a tutor, I have helped a great many struggling students overcome a lack of confidence and surpass their own expectations on results day. I’ve also helped disinterested students find their own personal motivations and combined these with exam board requirements to ensure academic success as well as personal fulfilment.

Please see the below 'Approach to Tutoring' section for subject-specific descriptions of my approach.

Tutoring Experience:

‘Carl is a very patient, versatile and astute tutor. His lessons are well structured and tailored for what you want to learn personally.’ Mr B – Worcester Park

‘Carl managed to dramatically change my outlook and perspective on the subject within only 6 weeks of the exam and instead of going in worried or slightly nervous - due to his efficient and interesting teaching methods - I entered the exam with a lot more confidence.’ Mr H – Ashtead

Tutoring Approach:

*** Biology ***

Biology is one of the most fascinating and complex subjects in the curriculum, covering a tremendous array of topics and ideas. The curriculum is so broad in fact that every student I have tutored has experienced difficulty at some point.

It is often the case that students who have a natural ability for understanding scientific vocabulary struggle to really grasp the underlying mechanisms, while those that do understand those processes often miss marks due to a problem communicating their ideas in a scientific way.

When tutoring Biology, I use a conversational and visual method which allows my students to get a clear idea of exactly how the mechanisms of life work. Once this is in place, the students find it easier to write about the practical investigations they complete as part of the syllabus. They also feel much more confident when it comes to using the correct terminology, and begin to think ahead of the work they complete in class instead of feeling like they are constantly behind.

*** Psychology ***

Studying Psychology at any level can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be more of a challenge than other subjects. Psychology students are expected to be able to evaluate the validity and reliability of experiments, interpret graphs and statistics and think in a purely theoretical sense, often simultaneously.

Rote learning of case studies and experiments alone will never provide a satisfactory understanding of Psychology and will probably significantly reduce the student's enjoyment and engagement with the subject.

When I tutor Psychology, I introduce concepts and theories, start a discussion, listen to the student's thoughts and then introduce case studies which provide harmonious or contradicting points of view.

Additionally, Psychology is at the center of my own academic investigations and I have completed courses on topics as diverse as 'Neuroscience and Learning' and 'Psychoanalytic Interpretations of Post-Modern Literature'.
