My name is Cameron and I am currently in the final year of my PhD at Coventry University investigating the effects of age, gender and obesity on the performance of skeletal muscle strength and power. This PhD primarily encompasses physiological, biological and biomechanical influences on muscle performance in aged and sarcopenic-obese model. I am incredibly passionate about this topic area as I feel understanding the implications of these debilitating factors on muscle performance can further our understanding of how our muscles are affected by age and obesity. This can then allow us to assess different interventions that can be employed to negate these effects and maintain or even improve muscle performance.
Prior to this, I completed my degree at Coventry University in Sport & Exercise Science, achieving a First Class Honours degree. I was particularly interested in physiology, nutrition and biomechanics but I mainly enjoyed my dissertation module as it included a variety of scientific disciplines to produce an outcome. During my degree, I have been published twice in peer-reviewed journals.
Aside from my academic achievements, I am a pretty normal, down to earth kind of person. I think I am friendly, approachable and a highly motivated, hard working individual.
I hope to be able to form a lasting and fruitful relationship with my tutees so that they can reach their highest potential.
I am currently employed as an Hourly Paid Lecturer at Coventry University teaching undergraduate Sport & Exercise Science and Sports Therapy students across a range of modules including physiology, biomechanics and nutrition. This includes both academic materials in a series of workshops and tutorials and practical skills sessions through lab-based sessions. Due to being relatively young (I am 24 years old) I feel I am able to connect with the students I teach well due to the small age gap. This means I am able to convey the material on a level they understand whilst still ensuring that it is the correct level of detail that is required. I feel I am able to translate this well on a one-to-one basis with potential tutees.
I firmly believe that an interactive and fun style of approach as opposed to purely textbook based learning is an important aspect to developing the understanding of a topic area. This is through a series of online-based videos, websites and engaging in topical discussion. However, this shall not deviate away from the main point of passing a qualification. I am always contactable so should a student feel that at any point they are struggling I am able to offer almost instantaneous support so that they can understand their problem.
I am laid back and able to provide substantial feedback on the work they produce, being constructive whilst being critical which is an important aspect of marking degree-level coursework.
