I am a recent graduate of the University of York, where I achieved a high 2:1 in History. Prior to that, I gained three As at A-Level, in English Literature, History and Classical Civilisation. I have a keen interest in literature and in all areas of history, and I am eager to share that enthusiasm in order to help others achieve!
Alongside one-on-one sessions, I am also happy to read over and advise on essays and personal statements; the feedback on these can be given in person, or remotely through a written report.
I do not currently have any more free sessions available, but I am continuing to offer a proofreading and essay-advice service.
While studying for my A-levels, I tutored my sister and helped her achieve high As in both her English Literature and History GCSEs. I have also had experience of proof-reading essays, helping to prepare presentations, and advising others on revision techniques. I have a good eye for detail, and am particularly strong in helping pupils to develop and strengthen the essay writing skills that are crucial for exam success.
I very much believe that subjects such as History and English Literature are best learnt through discussion, and so much of my tutoring focuses on developing the pupil's own ideas. For example, with English Literature I might focus a session on a particular theme within the text, and encourage brainstorming around that topic. This is also an approach that I take when working on essay technique- I establish a discussion on what the question is asking and the evidence the student might use in their answer, and then encourage them to shape those ideas into a strong, coherent structure. I have found that learning is more effective and enjoyable when my pupils take an active role in engaging with and discussing the topics they are studying. Of course, with less confident students this takes time, and I am careful to adapt my teaching style in order to best suit each individual pupil.
As a tutor, my role is to work alongside the education being provided by school, and to support my pupils so that they are best equipped to learn and achieve. I encourage them to raise any difficulties or problems that they have, so that I can tailor their sessions and the work that we do together to address these issues. I try to make my tutoring as pupil-led as possible, and hope to create an environment in which my pupils feel comfortable with asking questions and driving their own learning.
