I am an English as a Foreign Language Teacher passionate about teaching, travelling and culture. International House Riga Satva, English Language Teacher: September 2016 to present.
Working with students aged 3 through to adult classes at IH Riga as well as being posted out twice a week in my first year to Maksima, a Russian private school, and then in my second year to Laimes Lacis, a kindergarten. I am in charge of the planning and delivery of all of my classes, which consist of some book-based lessons and English Plus which allows me to use more creativity in the classroom. In my second year I have planned, marketed, choreographed and taught two extracurricular dance classes, one to children and one to adults. During my time here I have truly taken advantage of professional development opportunities through courses such as IHCYLT, IHVYL, and Psychology in ELT, as well as weekly training sessions focusing on topics such as Quality Classroom Interactions, Effective Planning, GRR: Gradual Release of Responsibility, and Retrieval Techniques. As a result, I have gained immeasurable experience and confidence for managing my students and catering to their needs.
Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, Casual Assistant: May 2014 to August 2016.
Helping at the museum with school trips and public days. Shadowing tours, occasionally leading them. Preparation and delivery of workshops. I found it interesting and rewarding to work with children outside of the classroom.
Jacari, (Voluntary) Tutor: October 2013 to June 2016. Teaching three Bengali primary school children in their home. My role was to help them catch up with school work and develop their English skills in order to meet the standard of other children in their class. This placement challenged me to plan activities which engage all three children of different ages, enabling me to multitask and deliver under pressure.
Manor Secondary School, (Voluntary) Tutor: February to March 2013.
Part-time, one-to-one tutoring of a year 9 pupil in Maths and English. This placement offered an additional two weeks training in Maths and English teaching at GCSE level C, as well as safeguarding information. This experience developed my communication skills when working one-to-one.
Pentland Primary School, (Voluntary) Classroom Assistant: November 2011 to April 2012.
Part-time, extracurricular enrichment set up through 6th form college. My role was to assist the teaching staff, working with a variety of year groups throughout the school in a classroom environment. This involved a variety of experience including whole class activities as well as working with individual children.
I am a very sociable person so love to talk about a wide variety of topics. This suits the needs of those who simply require informal English practice, but also allows for more structured learning in many realistic and engaging contexts. In tutoring all subjects, I am friendly yet professional, and aim to provide support free of judgment. If you're not making mistakes you're not pushing yourself hard enough!
