I have a degree in physics and A levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. I have 2 sons in their late twenties.
I attempted to qualify as a secondary science teacher in 2007. Towards the end of the course I realised I would never master full class teaching and withdrew. I have been tutoring ever since ; I am able to make use of my deep understanding of my subjects and impart that understanding to my students.
I have to be guided by the student. The student needs to decide before each lesson what they want to cover in the lesson. It might be a new topic which they don't understand, past papers they have problems with or advice on exam technique. I invariably find that building the student's confidence is the most important issue. I have recently started tutoring some students online. I have been pleasantly surprised at how effective it can be.
