Personal Description:

With a PhD in English, having taught IB in independent schools for 15 years, and as a recent graduate of Drama Studio London, I am very familiar with the challenges people face when interpreting and writing about literary texts, and I possess a wide-ranging set of skills for overcoming these challenges. I am passionate about facilitating my students' academic success and personal sense of achievement. I am based in Ealing, London (currently attending an accredited London-based drama school for one year), and I am willing to travel throughout the London area on weekends and occasional weekday evenings.

Tutoring Experience:

While my curricular focus has been on IB English A and AP Literature and Composition, I believe the skills driving these courses are just as relevant and transferable to students in other courses/grades/key stages as well as adults pursuing university degrees: incisive close reading, holistic knowledge/understanding, and the effective communication of both. I have also taught the Theory of Knowledge (ToK) course for several years. My literary knowledge ranges from across and British and American canons with a particular emphasis on drama and poetry. I am also keen to work with adults who read for pleasure.

Tutoring Approach:

When working with a tutee, my first priority is to determine what his/her curricular and/or personal goals and challenges are--this is essential. Then I quickly determine a differentiated path designed to address both simultaneously, making ongoing adjustments as the lesson proceeds. I achieve this goal by modelling the effective use of the requisite skill(s) followed by carefully guiding the tutee toward developing and demonstrating them independently. The foundation of this bespoke approach is always the intrinsic and extrinsic understanding of texts.
