Southend-on-Sea Tutor

Hello! I'm Bex and I'm a lecturer, qualified teacher, private tutor, mentor and educational progress coach. I'm here to help you get the best out of yourself and guide you to do well.

My main subject areas are German, Portuguese, English literature and language, English as a Foreign Language, Film and Media Studies, Study Skills, Primary Maths and English, and 11+. However, I am also very committed to Special Needs teaching and so please get in touch if you require this. I specialise in dyslexia coaching. If you are looking for both Maths and English GCSE tuition, I offer English and I work alongside another tutor who tutors Maths, so this is an option.

I'm also an educational progress coach and a mentor, so if you require mentoring or coaching, I could also provide that. I have a Certificate in Personal Coaching and have coached and mentored numerous people to achieve their goals. I am also now finishing an Accredited Diploma in Transformational Coaching with Animas School of Coaching. So if you are looking for life coaching, I offer this too.

I have a recent DBS check. Demand has increased a lot recently and I am now almost fully-booked. I get booked up very fast as word spreads quickly, so please get in touch if you have any questions! I do also have daytime slots for home-schooled children. I have numerous outstanding reviews online, which you will find if you search for my name and town with the words 'get the best tutor'.

FOR THE SPRING TERM AND EXAM PERIOD (FROM 19th MARCH)... EARLY MORNING SLOTS

Last year I was fully booked at the end of March, when I began getting even more exam enquiries. This year, I will be adding exam slots for the exam period to accommodate the increasing interest during this time of year. BOOK YOUR SLOT NOW! These times will be:

Tuesdays: 7:15-8:15am

Wednesdays  7:15-8:15am

These morning sessions -- for students of any age -- are flexible and a slightly earlier start would be possible (such as 7:00am), if the above times would not allow you enough time to travel to school. Please get in touch for more information!

I have waiting lists for other slots, if none of these are suitable, so get in touch! If you have any questions, feel free to message me. I look forward to tutoring you!

Tutoring Experience

I have a Ph.D, a PGCE and 11 years' experience teaching in the Primary, Secondary, FE and HE (University) sectors and have tutored both adults and children in several countries (the UK, Ireland, Brazil, China and Austria). I'm an Associate Member of the Higher Education Academy and have previously taught at The University of Nottingham and Maynooth University in Ireland.
I have previously taught English as a foreign language in both Brazil (tutoring postgraduates) and Austria (teaching classes of children aged 10-14). I also taught the children art, music and German.

Before I became a full-time tutor and WEA lecturer, I was a secondary school teacher. I had 100% A*-C GCSE pass rate in 2017 and most students getting one (sometimes two) grades higher than their target grade! In a recent (November 2017) teaching observation, I was graded as an outstanding teacher for my Film Studies and History lecturing with the WEA, as well.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching style is very varied and creative. I like to ask students questions to see if they know the answers and then give them strategies to try to work out the answers and guide them to think for themselves to become independent learners. With the introduction of the new GCSE, being able to think for yourself and develop critical thinking skills early is a real advantage. I'm friendly and approachable and always willing to answer any questions you might have. Lots of my tutees find colour helps them remember things, so I often get students to colour-code, label and draw to help them to remember the information.

At GCSE level, for German and English / English Literature, I provide guided revision sessions that are targeted to the texts or topics you request. If you are unsure of the content you require, you can complete а past paper in test conditions, so that I may assess the level you are working at. We also do walk-throughs of GCSE 9-1 past papers and you have the chance to complete regular exam-style homework questions.
