Personal Description:

My name is Ben and I graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Birmingham in 2014, where I studied English with Creative Writing.
I moved to Sheffield to be part of the welcoming creative community and to work, supporting myself in what I really believe is a rather special city.
I co-run Forest Sounds Theatre Company. Last year, we produced three different pieces, two in Sheffield and one in Doncaster. We are continuing to make new work and hope to take these projects further, including incorporating them into workshops for schools.

Tutoring Experience:

My first professional tutoring experience was teaching a friend's two children primary school maths, which was great fun.
Last academic year I tutored three secondary ages boys through First Tutors. One was 14, and I have been told our English lessons improved his confidence and performance across all subjects. Another English tutee was 11, and we had substantial success working on his reading ability and technical knowledge in preparation for his SATs. My third tutee was as 16, and needed help with both English and Maths for GCSE and I have received very encouraging feedback from his mother. I will be continuing to tutor all three boys in 2016.
At school and at university I founded and ran societies. I lectured, held workshops and worked with people one-to-one on writing and editing tasks.
I have a full CRB check and am an OFSTED-approved childminding assistant. I have worked in this capacity with my mother in previous years, and have looked after children from 0-10 during activities and playtime.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a firm believer in a creative approach to teaching. For one thing, children don't have to feel like learning is a chore. It can be unexpected fun. But also, I think that the benefit of education ultimately lies in its use. Having the ability to take something you have learned and use it creatively, in a new context, is empowering. These things on the page are not just verbs or square numbers; they have potential. I want my tutees to leave knowing this, and that way I'm sure that the learning will continue wherever they go!
I am drawn to teaching because it is possible to see the effect and value of one's work immediately. Through careful explanation and patient practice, anything can be taught and improved upon.
When teaching English, I have found that writing exercises are the best way to engage any tutee. Whether it be completely original creative writing or text-specific challenges, my aim is for the tutee to feel as if they are lifting the curtain to peak behind the mechanics of English language in use. When it comes to the syllabus or to exam preparation, I like tutees to create their own maps of what they need to know. This way, we can identify the more difficult items (for example, essay structure) and make new exercises that best reflect his or her particular needs.
Maths requires some step-by-step guidance for each process. When the process is learned, it becomes crucial to practice: not just with repetitive questions but by asking how we can construct our own questions and how the questions might look in an exam situation. I like to communicate the satisfaction inherent in logical progression through a given puzzle, resulting in a definitive answer. Simply with practice, explanation and application, even the hardest puzzles can become easy to solve.
