ONLY DAY TIME OR EASTER / HALF TERM HOLIDAY SPACES AVAILABLE (BEFORE 3PM UK TIME) UNTIL AFTER GCSE EXAMS IN FIRST WEEK OF JUNE 2019
I have been tutoring since 1995 and teach all ages and levels from pre-primary to PhD level. I have experience as a GSCE examiner (OCR) and my specialism is GCSE and A level teaching.
In the recent results (August 2018) most of my GCSE and A level students reached, or exceeded, the grades they were aiming for with one student getting a Grade 9 for Literature and Grade 8 for his Language examinations. Last year two of my students achieved grade 8s for their Literature examinations, with one reaching a Grade 9 for their Language and the other a Grade 8. Equally important were the results of all my "less able at English" students but particularly those achieving grade 4s or 5s. A degree level student increased her summer 2018 marks from B/C last year to A- and B+.
I teach a broad range of students coming to me from Ashford, Dover and Canterbury as well as more locally and online.
Chinese Skype students are especially welcome as I offer a complete package linked to gaining a place in UK independent schools.
I also offer tutoring for school refusers/ phobics, SEN (including dyslexia) and excluded students and children. My background is academic (teaching teachers) as well as providing welfare support for students in Universities. Additionally, I have considerable experience as a teacher supporting young people with SATS, entrance exams, GSCEs, A/S, degrees (UG,PG). I have particular interest in Literature and using it as a tool to engage and motivate learners with the broader, more formallised academic curriculum.
As well as extensive tutoring experience and my former role as a GCSE examiner, I have a broad range of academic qualifications, BA (1st class), MA, a PhD and a PGCE.
Examination technique, working to marking criteria and using past papers is the way I approach examination focused tutoring such as GCSEs. However, my approach to tutoring is student centred and uses a variety of resources including visual pictures and books to introduce literary concepts and language based insights - especially to younger students or pre GCSE students. I believe it is vital to work collaboratively with all learners.and to incorporate a wide range of learning tools in order to accommodate individual learning styles.
