Personal Description:

Hello! I am a 24 year old English Literature graduate living in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh. I work as a freelance copywriter and write fiction. This year I was selected by the Scottish Book Trust as one of their New Writers of 2015.

When I started secondary school I struggled hugely with Maths, and was given a tutor. He was friendly, patient and dedicated and he completely turned my Maths around. He also did wonders for my confidence in the classroom. It was a tremendously valuable experience for me, and I would love the opportunity to provide students with that sort of boost in the subject that I love, English.

Tutoring Experience:

Edinburgh: I work with students of all ages and abilities. Some are preparing for Nationals or Highers - we work with past papers and mark schemes almost every session, honing exam technique. Others simply want to improve their reading and writing - we read books together, practice comprehension and work on writing assignments.

Istanbul, 2012 - My first one to one tuition experience. I supplemented my income by helping Turkish students with their spoken English. These lessons revealed to me the benefits of one to one tuition as a space within which a student can build confidence and find a voice.

Bangalore, 2010 - I taught Maths and English at the Jeevodaya School to children between the ages of 8 and 18. Classes ranged from between 10 and 40 pupils – hectic!

Tutoring Approach:

I combine a friendly, conversational approach to learning with a developed understanding of the demands made of students at each level of their English education.

One on one tutoring affords a student the opportunity to identify and target problem areas specific to them. Consequently tailored learning is at the heart of my approach to tutoring. I will get to know your reading, writing and learning habits so that we may work efficiently and effectively to improve core skills such as close reading, essay structuring and exam technique.
