This is how 2 referees rated Barbara:
I qualified as a Primary teacher in 1970 and have taught in York schools for the last 20 years. In addition I am a Professional Development consultant for Numicon - structural Maths apparatus that is both a whole school programme and an intervention within Every Child Counts in use in many schools. As relaxation I knit, crochet and make sculpted clay chickens for my garden.
I have taught in a wide variety of Educational settings from Early Years 3+ to tutoring University of York staff and students in IT skills. However, most of my teaching work has been in Primary schools at Key Stage 1 and 2. In my Numicon consultant role I deliver training to Teachers and TAs in Primary schools in the use of this multisensory Maths apparatus.
I believe that maths gets 'too abstract, too quickly', for young learners and the resultant loss of confidence can impair their Maths progress throughout school and into adult life. Engaging with Numicon in a relaxed, conversational atmosphere can create the understanding and confidence that the child needs to move forward in their Maths, helping them to persist when they come across new concepts that are difficult to assimilate. Children love using Numicon activities to discover the connections and patterns in mathematics. They become able to use and apply their knowledge, developing proficiency in solving real life problems. Numicon work extends into fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, factors and knowledge of algebra etc, giving visual images of these concepts which are particularly useful for those having difficulties. I find working with Numicon is a joyful experience for both child and tutor.
