Personal Description:

I'm a friendly guy who enjoys helping people achieve the best results they can in life. I have a strong academic record and work hard to ensure I not only achieve what is required, but to satisfy my own personal goals. I am currently an Undergraduate at The University of York studying for an MPhys in Theoretical Physics.

I also have experience working with younger children and teenagers due to my mother being a foster carer and an ex-childminder, where I would help her with working with the children/teens.

Tutoring Experience:

During my Sixth Form years I was a mentor for the A level students in Physics, Chemistry and also for the GCSE Science students. This required giving up my lunchtimes and learning how to teach a student to work out the answer, rather than just providing the answer to them and asking them to memorise it.

I am looking to increase my experience in tutoring so that I can be a more effective tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I place a strong emphasis on exam technique when mentoring students as I feel that that is the area most school's don't teach to the extent they should. If the student does not feel confident in examinations I also go through past papers with them and explain the mark scheme to them so they understand what the examiner wants.
I don't teach just to the exam paper's requirements, I also encourage the students to read around the subject and extend their understanding beyond the baseline requirements so that the exam material is used frequently to help access higher levels of understanding; because for me, the goal of education is not to be able to say the student has high grades, but for them to actually understand the subjects they have spent 5 years learning (7 in the case of A level students).

However, I also understand that some students have an approach to learning that they prefer, so I ask the student how they prefer to learn and then try to integrate that into my approach for that student so that my mentoring has the highest possible effectiveness it can, and by extension, to help the student attain the best possible results they can.
