Hi, My Name is Arthur, I have a Masters degree in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield and I live in Bristol. I have been tutoring in A-level chemistry and GCSE Science for quite a while now and I really enjoy it. It's great to watch a pupils confidence and ability grow as the weeks roll by.
A Chemistry degree includes a lot of Maths, Biology, and Physics (and I received top A-level grades in Maths & Physics) so I am able to provide support there as well. I like to make broad connections across the sciences so that students come to really understand their subject material.
I started tutoring in around 2012. My partners little sister, Anna, was struggling with her A-level chemistry exam, while I was studying for my Chemistry degree. Anna was a hardworking student but found A-level Chemistry very tough as it includes complex and abstract topics like NMR spectroscopy, reaction mechanisms and kinetics.
Anna needed a C grade in Chemistry to get into the University she wanted but she was getting D and E grades. I **Contact Detail Removed**d with Anna every week for a year and she improved rapidly. I found that I really enjoyed tutoring, especially explaining a tricky concept and at the end of the year Anna managed to get a B grade in her final exams. She was able to get into the University she wanted despite missing her grades in another A-level.

There are two vital things for Science at school level… concepts and exams. So my approach focuses on these two components.
Students simply can't succeed if they don't grasp a few key concepts, so the first thing to do is to understand what the gaps are in their understanding of these concepts and then to fill them!
As well as conceptual grasp of their topic, successful students also need to have good exam technique. They need to be prepared to recognise patterns in exam questions, they need mnemonics for remembering vital ideas and they need to consistently pick up easy marks. A good student can easily lose a grade by not including the correct units in their answer, so it is vital to have good exam technique.
So my approach focuses on going through past exam papers and discussing questions in detail with students. I will talk them into getting the right answer and by doing that they will understand the concepts and the exam technique.
However, if a student would rather take a different approach I would be happy to try taking it.
