Personal Description:

I have just graduated from Cambridge University with a First Class degree in Spanish and Portuguese, and a 'Mark of Excellence' for oral language. The great benefit of this degree is its breadth, covering language and literature as well as linguistics, history, critical theory, film and culture. This means I would be able to tailor my experience to the needs and focus of each student, or even push him or her into new routes which could prove interesting, especially for university applications.

The other great thing about the degree is that it allows you a year abroad in the third year, which I spent in Mexico and Brazil, working in Media and Journalism. I would hope to enthuse students about the possibilities that come from studying languages, and also bring in some fresh approaches which come from such experiences beyond the books.

Portuguese is still a marginal language in the education system in the UK, but it is growing in importance in the global context, with interest and opportunities rising with regards to Brazil. It is a fantastic language to pick up alongside Spanish or French, or even on its own, and being able to speak it in the next few years is going to give students and professionals a real edge.

Tutoring Experience:

I have privately seen many students through the university application process, focusing especially on the structuring and fine honing of the Personal Statement, in terms of showing an engaging style and presenting a decent starting point for interview.

I have also worked with a London based agency which focuses on preparing students for University applications.

I directed a series of teaching workshops for children whilst on my Year Abroad, so I also have good experience working with younger students, and in diverse situations.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is different for each level and each student, depending on the syllabus we are working for and the needs of the individual. But as a general rule, learning has to fun and dynamic for anything to go in! We also have to find a good balance between defining set points that can be easily learnt, and pushing the student to think around these and develop their ideas.

Some people learn better with visual aids and others through written or aural techniques. I prefer to mix these and tailor them appropriately.

I usually find conversation and discussion are essential for both language learning, and stimulating and useful study of literature. I like to draw up a set of starting points for discussion, using the syllabus, and then push the student to think around these. We would then look back over the new ideas raised and work out how best to consolidate, learn and use these for the student's goal, whether it be exams, applications or further learning. This approach is essential to the British university system and proves to be very useful in pushing students to tackle new ideas and develop their own capabilities at all levels.
