Skelmersdale Tutor

Born in England, I moved to the USA where I earned BA, MA and Ph.D. degrees and undertook overlapping careers in teaching, business, writing, public speaking and the performing arts. I have published three books and am working on two more. I also help others publish their work through my print-on-demand services. In business, I rose to the level of Regional Vice President of a major financial services company. As a musicologist and performing artist I am the founding chairperson of the world music committee of the National Flute Association, and the founder and editor-in-chief of www.flutejournal.com. I have lectured and performed throughout Europe, the USA and India. As a teacher, I have taught on every level from elementary to post-graduate on these same three continents. Outside of music I also teach Future Studies and run a research institute in this area. See:charmonia-institute.com

Tutoring Experience

I began as a teaching assistant in Birmngham. After graduating from college, during periods of graduate work, and while working on my writing, I worked primarily as a substitute (supply) teacher in several parts of the USA, most recently in Montgomery County, Maryland, near Washington DC., and as a private instructor in music, and tutor in academic subjects. This adds up to many years of experience on all grade levels and in many different settings, covering all subjects in the humanities and social sciences. I have also held teaching positions at several colleges, again, covering a variety of subjects in the humanities. As Dean of Curriculum Development at a private college in the Midwest US, I went deeply into the foundations of all subjects in the Arts and Sciences.

Tutoring Approach

Good tutoring always consists of adapting fundamental principles of study and learning to the specific needs of the student and the subject matter. The principles in question are well-established study skills, based on goal setting, organisation and time management. Learning is reinforced by note taking, writing and responding to questions. Weaknesses in reading skills also need to be addressed when present. On this basis, the approach to material must be adapted to the student's individual approach to learning, with its various strengths and weaknesses. It is the tutor's job to discern these patterns as quickly as possible in order to tailor the study processes to the student's individual needs.
