I have just finished A-Levels with 4 A* prediction in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. I am currently in first year at University College London studying MSc in Mathematics with Economics. My choice of subjects highlights my love for Maths and I take appreciation in helping GCSE and A-Level students achieve their full potential in this rewarding subject.
I have been a volunteer for Generating Genius who teach maths and other STEM subjects to disadvantage A-Level students. As a maths tutor I was able to encourage young people to consider studying mathematics at university. I prepared lesson plans accessible to students of all abilities and challenged able students with more problem sets. Furthermore, I provided them with moral help and support to aid their university applications such as reviewing their personal statements. To make teaching more interesting, I included fun starter questions at the start of the lesson that linked with the topics that we would be covering in class. I realized that every student has a different way of learning. For example, some learn by doing past papers questions but others learn by doing interactive group activities. I promoted all these different styles in my teaching which was really appreciated by my students. This is visible in the feedback I received - two students moved up a grade in their AS Maths and one student moved up two grades in AS further Maths. Through this experience, I learnt to be persistent and communicate my thoughts clearly and concisely.
I believe that as a tutor, I would be able to make a positive difference in young people’s life. For me, it is extremely satisfying to be able to inspire young people to aim high and achieve their goals. Furthermore, I have always believed that teaching is the best way to learn because teaching calls for complete understanding of the concept. So, teaching other students would help me develop my own subject knowledge. Moreover, students always have a new way of looking at a problem, hence, this would help me break my own mind-blocks and barriers, enabling me to become a better mathematician
