I am passionate about finding the most effective ways of stimulating and sustaining intellectual growth among those who enter my classroom. Learning is a complex process that is individual, content and context specific. As a teacher, I am attentive to these factors and work to be flexible, adapting my approaches according to the needs of learners, subject matter and setting. I believe it is crucial for teachers to cultivate learning partnerships with students. In my view, teaching is not about instructing or imparting information to students as if their minds were waiting to be filled with my knowledge. Rather, teaching is igniting transformative learning; empowering students to take responsibility for their learning, inspiring courage to grow intellectually, cultivating curiosity, providing opportunities for developing relationships, clarifying values, uplifting the spirit and igniting action.
I am passionate about Maths, I like people and I have good social relationships. I don’t look for insults, so I don’t see them, I always have high expectations from people and I have a positive approach for everybody. I believe in offering equal chances to every human being because everybody is of a huge value. A teacher has the a special role: knowing where students should be, a teacher should not break students’ spirit, but be there to encourage them to enjoy and achieve, to understand that the essence of life itself is ‘service, not self’.
I am a Maths Head of Department, teaching from Functional Skills up to A level. My decision to go into teaching was final when, during my Statistics Masters, I was offered the opportunity to deliver Financial Statistics seminars to first year students at ‘Al.I.Cuza’ University Iasi, Romania. When teaching, I strive to create an atmosphere conducive to group interaction and idea sharing. My own manner in the classroom and during more personal interactions is one of empathy, respect and encouragement, always laced heavily with humour. I strongly encourage students to interact with me on an individual level via email, so I do not just teach them, I mentor them. I encourage my students to discuss ways to improve. It is important that they feel the instructor cares about them. Students need to know their teacher is fair, approachable and sincere and is there to help them to learn and succeed.
My classes incorporate a range of activities and methods so that the students feel encouraged to contribute, regardless of their own perceived strengths or weakness. They experience domino games, discussion, films with maths content as well as investigations and debates. Assignments combine 1 minute tests (where appropriate), mental Maths exams, term papers, projects, investigations, diagrams, and other content-specific exercises. I am always willing to assist pupils along the way, working with them individually, reviewing rough-drafts, or helping them focus their work. These activities also give me an opportunity to get to know my students better.
In every-day practice, I implement high standards in the classroom in a number of ways. Teaching is rarely "value-free" and my own classes carry messages of openness to difference, respect and dignity for all peoples, intelligent risk-taking, fairness and the ability to question assumptions. I hope that during the course of the term students will learn factual knowledge, skills such as critical thinking and improved writing, re-examination of their environment and application of knowledge to their own lives. I also hope to meet whatever goals or expectations they may bring to the class.
