I am an enthusiastic Maths teacher, whose has successfully tutored students aged from 14 to 18 through GCSE and AS/A2 examinations on a part time basis for the last 3 years. I have now decided to tutor students on a full time basis.
Having spent a number of years in industry, I gained my PGCE as a Secondary Mathematics teacher in 2007. I have taught mathematics in a secondary school for 5 years and subsequently at a Newcastle college for 4 years. I have had experience tutoring the new GCSE specification, which started this academic year and will result in students being awarded the new numeric grades from 1 (low) to 9 (high).
I am keen to encourage the student to take the lead in tutoring sessions, by asking them to bring difficulties and problems to each tutoring session. However I recognise that some students need more structure in tutorial sessions. In which case I like to provide recap material for students to identify difficulties and use these to direct a lesson. I think a tutor should work in tandem with the tutee's school to ensure that the sessions are aimed at consolidating or if required extending the topics that the student is currently studying at school.
