Personal Description:

I am passionate about passing on my enthusiasm for my subjects to today's young people, and I try to engage every student in a way that draws the best out of them, while encouraging them to develop their own academic interests.

As well as subject content, I develop a student’s skills in exam and revision techniques, essay planning and writing, and time management; all of which are necessary to tackle a particular syllabus.

I've tutored throughout my undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and have a love for English, Latin and Greek literature, particularly poetry, which I thoroughly enjoy teaching. Whilst at university, I was awarded the H J Rose Memorial Prize by the University of St Andrews for my dissertation on Homer's Odyssey, and was shortlisted for best Classics essayist at the International Undergraduate Awards 2015. In my spare time I am an artist and illustrator.

Tutoring Experience:

I have experience tutoring individuals from primary school age through to undergraduate and beyond. In the past year I have helped students surpass their predicted grades, achieving As and A*s at GCSE and A Level, and Firsts at university, which has provided them with the confidence to pursue their studies at the next stage of their education or next professional stage.

Law:
I was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 2017. I hold a LLM in public and property law, and have successfully tutored students during their undergraduate degree/GDL in these, and other, areas, including: Contract, Criminal, Employment, Equity and Trusts, EU, Evidence, Insolvency, Housing, Human Rights, Land, (Public Administrative and Constitutional) and Tort Law.

I am happy to offer help with applications to chambers and firms, and gaining legal work experience or with legal interviews. I have recently helped several students to acquire mini-pupillages and placements in law centres.

English Literature:
Topics I have taught recently include:
Poetry - All poems included in the Anthologies for AQA GCSE: Power and Conflict, and Love and Relationships; EdExcel iGCSE Anthology
Plays - Shakespeare (in particular: Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, Taming of the Shrew, Othello, The Winter's Tale) The History Boys, An Inspector Calls.
Books - Victorian Literature (in particular: Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Jekyll and Hyde, Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol), Dystopian Literature, Animal Farm.

English Language:
I cover all aspects of English Language, including grammar, comprehension, creative and descriptive writing. I have particular experience in teaching the AQA English Language exams and the Edexcel IGCSE.

Entrance Exams (10+, 11+, 13+):
I have helped students gain entry to Dulwich, St. Paul's, Merchant Taylor's, Newstead, JAGs, Alleyn's and Wilson's. I cover in particular, all aspects of the English and Latin papers. I keep up to date on the Entrance exams for all the major public and grammar schools in London. I am also happy to give advice and practice for interviews.

Classics:
I hold a MA in Classics and Classical Languages, having thoroughly enjoyed a holistic education in the Classics at university.
Greek texts (in Greek and English) - Homer's Iliad, Homer's Odyssey, Greek Tragedy (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides), Greek Comedy, Greek History, Women in Athens, Ancient Athens and Ancient Sparta.
Roman texts (in Latin and English) - Virgil's Aeneid, Latin Poetry (including Ovid, Horace, Catullus), Roman City Life, Roman Britain, Women in Rome.

Whilst studying Classics at University, I was part of a nationwide team called the Iris Project, that taught Latin and Classical Studies to primary and secondary schools around the country, on a weekly basis. My work with the St Andrews branch helped instil a renewed passion for Classics into the schools of Fife, and our classes were recorded and featured on a BBC Radio 4 programme titled “Latinists in Fife”.

Tutoring Approach:

Approach:
All of my sessions are tailored to a particular student, and I will always address the weaknesses in a student’s understanding of a subject, through a discursive and reassuring style. If a student needs help with particular topics, those are always my priority and I use a combination of exercises, exam questions and discussion to overcome any anxiety and to achieve the desired outcome.

School/College students:
I am a friendly and approachable tutor, who tries to engage students as a role model as well as a teacher. I feel it is important that parents are involved in the tutoring process, so that they can help support the student and encourage their studies beyond the classroom. I keep parents informed of progress and problems at all stages.

Undergraduates:
I provide help with research, planning and writing coursework, particularly problem questions, essays and case notes. I can also help students to create effective exam notes and prepare for their upcoming exams through one to one sessions or remotely.

Homework:
I often set homework to supplement my sessions, though I always check this with parents first. I regularly check progress through assessments and tests.

Cancellation:
I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, unless in medical circumstances. I offer 1.5 and 2 hour block sessions, weekly or fortnightly; online or in person.

Travel:
During busy periods (such as exam or revision seasons), I may have to ask for a contribution for travel by taxi, to ensure that I can fit you into my schedule. This will be discussed in advance.

Payment:
If sessions are in person, I ask for payment to be made before or at the end of each session, either by bank transfer or cash. If sessions are online, I ask for payment to be transferred before the session or immediately after the session. If I work remotely, I ask for payment to be transferred before I return any work to the student.
