I am a highly experienced teacher/lecturer of A level English Literature and English Language. I live in Cheshire where I was Head of English in a Beacon status college until I retired. I decided to give up full time teaching while still young enough to enjoy some free time but I continue to be passionate about my subject and about passing on my knowledge!
I have a husband and two grown up sons and I am currently looking forward to improving my Italian as well as travelling a little more often, both in the UK and abroad.
I have taught English Language and Literature for over twenty years in two secondary schools in Cheshire and, most recently, in Further Education as senior lecturer and Head of English for six years during which time the department was judged 'outstanding' in two inspections. I have vast experience of A level teaching and have also marked for a major examination board. My results at college have been well above the national average with a consistent 100% pass rate at A2 and a high percentage of students achieving grades A-C. As part of my role as Head of English, I also mentored a number of trainee and newly qualified teachers. I consider my strengths to be my teaching resources, knowledge of examination requirements and techniques and my enthusiasm which past students have frequently commented on. In addition, I am currently involved in the development of literature resource materials for an internet site. Throughout my career I have done private tutoring - all with excellent results.
I treat each student as an individual and tailor my teaching to their learning needs. The opportunity for one-to-one intensive tutoring allows me to identify strengths and weaknesses and develop approaches to improve overall performance. I emphasise the importance of exam technique and ensure tutees have plenty of examination question practice followed by detailed feedback from an examiner's point of view. One to one provides the ideal space and opportunity for students to improve their essay skills, an area which they often find challenging however well they know and understand their examination texts. The planning and writing skills developed in this way are of immense help, not only for good performance at A level, but also for work at university and in future careers. I also aim to enthuse students as we study the subject together!
