Personal Description:

*** Check out my 5* reviews! ***

I am an experienced tutor and have taught academic English, French and Italian for several years at university, in schools and privately.

I'm currently a final year PhD candidate in the Italian department at the University of Bristol, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. I have also taught at the University.

During my PhD I have completed fellowships at the **Contact Detail Removed** of Congress in Washington D.C… and the British School at Rome. I was previously a financial journalist and a part-time private tutor. Prior to that, I helped to run two online tuition companies; I worked on the business development side and tutored English, French, Italian and History. I am therefore very up to date with tuition standards and styles, and I know what is needed to get top marks in the much-dreaded exams!

My work as a journalist has given me particularly strong knowledge for the English Language paper (Understanding and Producing Non Fiction Texts). My academic study means I am confident with English literary analysis and, of course, Modern Foreign Languages.

In 2010, I gained a distinction in the MA in Cultural Memory at the University of London. Between 2005-2009 I completed my undergraduate degree at Bristol University in French and Italian.

Tutoring Experience:

My tuition experience in academic English, French and Italian spans from year 8 to university level, both on and offline. I have also taught undergraduates at the University of Bristol.

In 2016, I taught university-style seminars on British history in two secondary schools near Bristol for a small group of students, which was hugely enjoyable. Last year, all my students achieved A grade or higher at GCSE and A-Level (with one securing a competitive offer to read French and Italian at a top university).

Having helped to run two tuition companies, I am up to date with tutoring styles and strategies. For students sitting exams, I know it's essential to combine knowledge development with exam technique in order to get the best grades and I focus on past paper practice from day one (this also helps to increase familiarity and reduce nerves). However, I think the most important part of teaching is instilling enthusiasm in a pupil and I hope that my relaxed and approachable manner helps with that!

My tutoring experience began in 2008, when I worked as a private French tutor to a GCSE pupil for 6 months. My pupil was awarded an A*. During the same period, I took part in the government-run Student Associates Scheme, where I worked in a school in Bristol as a Modern Foreign Languages classroom assistant, working alongside other teachers as well as independently.

While studying on Réunion Island for my year abroad, I worked in the University's Science Department teaching English to university students. I worked individually providing both private and group tuition, as well as supporting the head of English in a large class of around 30 students.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very personable and therefore enjoy my tuition sessions, which are relaxed but professional. Check out my feedback!

I combine subject knowledge with exam technique in order to get the best grades at exam time. I have never really understood why the curriculum can be so dull when humanities subjects give so much scope for fascinating resources and material. I aim to improve the student's grade but more importantly to inspire a passion for the subject since interest and enjoyment is what will encourage students to hit the books!
