Personal Description:

I have a First Class degree in English Studies and History from the University of Stirling, a Masters in Historical research, also from the University of Stirling, and a PhD in Medieval History from the University of Aberdeen. My PhD was interdisciplinary, focusing on medieval literature as well as traditional historical sources.

I live in central Edinburgh and have access to transport - I am happy to travel to tutees.

Tutoring Experience:

I have wide ranging, varied teaching experience. I am currently working as an Associate Lecturer for the Open University, teaching courses on early modern history, and an introduction to the Arts. I also work for the University of the Highlands and Islands, teaching medieval to early modern Scottish and European history. I have previously taught at the Universities of Aberdeen and Dundee. I have recent experience tutoring English and History at GCSE/Standard Grade and A'level/Higher, and I have tutored in Sociology also. Additionally I have experience working with younger children in casual education settings - most notably as an Events Steward with English Heritage.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very flexible approach to tutoring that is shaped by the expectations and needs of my students. Our first session will be a 'getting to know you' occasion, where we will discuss the student's (and where appropriate the parent's) current level and their goals. I work closely with the Curriculum for Excellence and the National Curriculum for National/Higher and GCSE/A'Level qualifications. If passing exams is the most important thing then we will focus on exam preparation and practice papers, concentrating on planning and writing exam answers until the student is fully confident. If support throughout the learning process is required then we will work closely with set texts and sources to gain a thorough understanding. My aim is always to enable the student to be able to work independently, and to feel confident in their work.
I can also offer short period tuition, with a set time frame (2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks) if support is required for submitting a specific piece of work, for example university essays and dissertations - please ask me about my set rate for short tuition.
