Personal Description:

I am an English with Creative Writing graduate with a passion for both teaching and learning. I studied twelve GCSEs, including English Literature and English Language, Spanish, and History, and achieved A* grades in these four, as well as another two A*s, five As, and a B in my other eight subjects. At AS level I studied English Literature, Ancient History, Spanish, and Religious Studies, and achieved four As in those. In my final A level exams, I achieved an A*AA in English Literature, Spanish, and Ancient History respectively. I recently achieved a First Class with Honours BA from the University of Birmingham. Throughout my whole secondary and sixth form education I attended the Grey Coat Hospital comprehensive school in central London, where I was inspired by the teachers and students, and the general enthusiasm for learning which encouraged my own studies.

My studies have enabled me to really understand the requirements and skills that exam boards and schools are looking for, and I believe that every student has the ability to harness their own skills and build on them in order to achieve their potential, gain valuable skills in critical thinking and writing, and really enjoy their education.

My comprehensive education at Grey Coat means I have plenty of experience working alongside students of all abilities, from a range of backgrounds, and I believe in the potential of every student to achieve and flourish in their studies and confidence, regardless of their level of ability.

Tutoring Experience:

I have some experience both as a tutor and a tutee- I was tutored in maths at GCSE, therefore I understand the requirements of the student.

I have done work experience at two comprehensive primary schools in London, and worked with year four students of a wide range of abilities, helping them in their literacy, reading, history, and RS studies. The experience was hugely rewarding, and piqued my interest in tutoring as a potential career.

I also tutored a year 11 GCSE English student at my school as part of my duties as a senior prefect, and I really enjoyed the one-on-one approach to teaching, which really allowed me to work out what was best for her, and watch her improve her grade from a C to a confident A.

I have been tutoring with First Tutors since November 2015, and my clients are very satisfied with their lessons (English GCSE level). I have found tutoring to be hugely rewarding and I am thrilled with the positive feedback I have received.

Tutoring Approach:

I very much believe in learning as a collaborative effort by student and tutor; it should be a conversation into which both parties contribute, and a conversation which stimulates the thinking skills of the student, allowing them to form their own opinion and find their passion within a subject, whilst simultaneously honing their practical skills and exam technique.

My approach to the tutoring process is always to consult the student on their thoughts; how they feel about the subject, what type of learner they are, and what kind of feedback works for them. Sessions would always begin with a quick chat about what they have been studying that week at school; it is important that as a tutor, I know what course and exam board they are studying, as well as any key texts. Depending on the student, we might then go on to review any work or essays that the student has done at school, and pinpoint any areas of confusion or opportunities for improvement.

I also recognise that exams are increasingly the focus of many tutees, and I would make sure to help with exam technique and revision tips, especially towards exam season. Everyone learns differently, and I would strive to help my tutees to find their own way of revising that will optimise their learning and equip them for future studies.
