Personal Description:

I am a graduate of the University of Cambridge, and I have been a tutor for the last 7 years. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and young adults and helping them achieve success.

I have A-levels (grade A/A*) in maths, French, music, theatre studies and general studies, and gained 11 A/A*s at GCSE. I am very well acquainted with both national curriculum and independent school syllabuses and exams, and have experience teaching children aged between 5 and 18.

I also teach most subjects up to KS3, maths and English up to GCSE, and music up to degree level (1st year).

I also have experience tutoring for 11+ and 13+ common entrance and independent school exams. Past students have gained places and/or scholarships at Radley, Dulwich, Alleyn's, Whitgift, City of London School for Girls, Sutton Grammar, Bedales and Bryanston.

I offer a half-price trial lesson at the start so we can get to know each other and I can work out where you are now, and then go away and plan how to get you to where you want to be. Or if you just want to meet for a chat (with you, or you and your child), then that's without a charge.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Tutoring Experience:

For the last 7 years I have been tutoring as my main profession. I have taught students ranging in age from 5 to 18, and have experience teaching to national curriculum and independent school board exam syllabuses. I set homework every lesson (unless the parents think their children are getting enough from school already, which is sometimes the case!) and aim to improve the student's grades whilst keeping the atmosphere light. I've often been told by parents that their child really enjoys my lessons and looks forward to them, which is quite a trick when the subject is algebra!

I also have experience of classroom teaching (for school SATs/GCSE revision and Saturday schools) and have worked with some of the top agencies in London.

I have tutored more than 15 students via online tutoring (for SATs, GCSEs, entrance exams and general support) so please get in touch if you would like to talk about that option. I offer a discount as there is no travel time involved.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that tutoring should be about discovering what knowledge a person already has and building on that, not with a stream of facts originating from the tutor, but with a series of questions that guide the student to answering the question for themselves. Not only does this instill a much greater sense of accomplishment in the student (important so as to keep them motivated and confident in their abilities) but also helps it stick in the mind - numerous studies have shown that you're much more likely to succeed at something if you've had to work out the answer yourself than if you're simply told the answer. So to me, tuition should be less about learning facts and more about discovering them and the reasons for their existence.
